Why I run....

Most days I enjoy running. I need the time to myself to burn off calories, anxiety, steam, and to get all systems flowing smoothly (literally). Most days I am excited to get to the gym and hit the treadmill.  I don't run outside often in the winter due to it getting cold and it gets dark early, plus I like that the treadmill holds me accountable for a distance. I like to change up the inclines and speeds. I do like a good, brisk outside run though, and try to get some in if I can. Anyhow, in the past couple weeks, I've been not running as much as I'd like to. Primarily because of busy schedules.Lots going on this month.  The other day I had an acquaintance say to me, " Why do you run? I hate running and I don't think I could ever run like you do." My response was simply this- I run  because it keeps me healthy, mentally and physically.  While I aim to run at least  15 miles a week  (most weeks), I am not a "runner" either. I run for completely selfish reasons.Let me entertain you with those reasons. I run because:
  • It's time I get to myself.
  • I love what it does for my legs.
  • I run because I get to sweat out whatever is on my mind.
  •  I can create Zumba and other dance routines in my head.
  •  I like to challenge myself with speeds and distances.
  • It helps me poop.
  • I have huge anxiety about things I can't control in my life, and it allows me to think more reasonably, and be more relaxed, most days.
  • I run because I can.
  •  I am a falcon, and I have powerful wings.
  • The scale is a whore.
  •  I get more energy, and I sleep better.
  •  I LOVE FOOD.
  • I run because there's this inner demon that chases me and tells me I can't do it. (Don't EVER tell me I can't do something, because I will, and I will be awesome!)
You see, I don't really just have one reason WHY I run. All I know is that while I hate the idea of having to workout, I love a good run. I love the adrenaline and the super powers I feel after a good run. I love the rush. I love thinking I look like Heidi Klum afterwards. I love that I have changed my body, and that I continue to push myself to be a healthier me. I run because its what gives me freedom- from my own negative thoughts, from the world, from people who piss me off,  from demands, and I run because of cupcakes.

What is your "why"?

  1. Erika, Great blog! I run for the freedom of knowing that I can. When so many women my age have given up and have just thrown in the towell...I run. It clears my head, makes me feel strong and powerful and yes, it gives me killer legs! It also gives me the ability to eat a cupcake every now and then :)

  2. I love this! Now I will have some answers for when people say that to me, which is obscenely often, BTW! I run because it is my time of peace to be in my own head, without being Mommy, wife or anything else.
